Artist. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he was best known for his paintings based on Australian folklore. With very little training in art, he started at age 21 by designing sets and costumes for a Sydney stage production. Nolan served in the Australian Army during World War II and after the war he began to paint the local desolate desert landscapes in a representational style. Apart from his landscapes, most of his works dealt with Australian historical or legendary characters. In 1955, he moved to England, continued to paint native Australian landscapes and was involved with the theatre, designing stage sets. His art was exhibited internationally with many of his paintings and prints went on to be in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He was knighted in 1981 and became a member of the Order of Merit in 1983. He died at age 75 in London, England. In 2010, his painting “First-Class Marksman” (1946), became the most expensive Australian painting ever sold.
