Clarence was the son of John Wesley Dixon Jr. and Lulu Vernice Wood. He married Lehman Dixon in 1928, they had no children. Clarence served with U.S. Army during World War I.

Entered the service September 25, 1917, at Galesburg, Illinois; to Jefferson Barracks; made Corporal, August, 1918; Sergeant, November 18, 1918; served with 306th US Calvary on Border; transferred to 49th FA, August 25, 1918; in the service 540 days; discharged February 10, 1919.
