Born Elizabeth Bay, Sydney; son of The Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, M.L.C. and Lady Louisa (nee Gilhooley) Hughes. Husband of Eileen Ivia Sara Hughes He graduated BA MB ChM from the University of Sydney and worked as a medical practitioner at Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital for a few months before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in March 1916. He embarked from Brisbane for overseas on board HMAT "Seang Choon" (A49) on 19 September 1916. He arrived in France on 4 December 1916 and was wounded in action by shell fire in Bull Trench near Guedecourt, Somme on the morning of 11 December 1916 and died the next day at the 36th Casualty Clearing Station, France. He was 26 years of age.
