Maurice Gray was the son of Dr and Mrs Alan Gray of York house, Chaucer road, Cambridge. He was educated at Scaitcliffe, Winchester where he captained the footballing eleven, followed by a year at Trinity college in Cambridge before relinquishing his studies under the advice of an eminent artist choosing to study at Slade school instead. It was said at the time that he was an artist of great promise , his musical gifts were notable and his literary taste highly cultivated.
In 1914 following the declaration of war he enlisted with the 2nd Dragoon guards (Queens bay) and went to France in June 1915. He subsequently transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry), 7th Sqdn before being killed during fighting on August 8th 1918.
