Captain Irving Day Wiltsie served in the United States Navy from June, 1921
until his death on November 24, 1943. He was the Commanding Officer of the
escort carrier U.S.S. Liscome Bay (CVE-56) when his ship was struck by a torpedo
by a Japanese submarine near the Gilbert Islands.
Captain Wiltsie, Rear Admiral Henry Mullinnix, 53 officers and 591 enlisted men
went down with the ship after it was destroyed by fires and explosions.

Captain Wiltsie was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. The citation for Capt.
Wiltsie's Navy Cross noted his "calm, courageous action and valiant devotion to
duty" which inspired the surviving members of the crew.
