The U.S.S. Shea ( DM-30 ), while on picket duty 20 miles northeast of Zampa Misaki, Okinawa, was hit by a Japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 manned Ohka on the starboard side of her bridge structure. It entered the sonar room, traversing the chart house, passageway and batch and exploded causing fires on the mess deck, and in CIC, the chart house, division commander's stateroom, No. 2 upper handling room, and compartment A-304-L.
" 1 " officer and " 24 " men were killed ( noted below ), and 91 others were wounded to varying degrees.
Herbert was "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.
He was awarded a Purple Heart.

The Shea survived the attack and earned one battle star for her part in the Okinawa campaign during World War II.
Husband of Mrs. Bernice Wallenbeck, who resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and dad of a daughter he was never able to see.
