Alvaro Everett Vieira was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Portuguese immigrants Manuel Vieira, a laborer, and Lucinda Leal Vieira, a spooltender at a mill.

Mr. Vieira, a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Arizona, had been in the Navy nine months when he died on Dec. 7, 1941, in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5390 in Portsmouth was named in Mr. Vieira's memory.
