William served as a Private First Class & Gunner on B-25J #43-36128, 77th Bomber Squadron, 28th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Musegon County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Private on June 24, 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a office clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25J #43-36128, along with other B-25's, took off from APO #726, Attu Island, Alaska on an offensive sweep for Japanese fighter planes in the area. They were reportedly shot down by multiple Japanese Army Ki-43 Hayabusa “Oscar” fighter's over the Kuriles and crashed at sea during the war.

William was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Service # 16084872

B-25J # 43-36136, which was flying with B-25J #43-36128, also suffered the same fate on the same day.
