Commander Thomas was the commanding officer of the submarine, USS Pompano (SS-181), which was lost with all hands, while on her seventh war patrol in the Pacific due to possible Japanese mines or a catastrophic operational malfunction on approximately September 17, 1943.

In addition to the Purple Heart, Commander Thomas had also been awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star & Bronze star.
