Morgan was the oldest of 13 children of Morgan & Mary (Davis) Jones, Jr. His parents married in 1773 and moved from Fayette Co. PA to Grave Creek, WV. Per a bible started by Morgan's youngest daughter he was born 15 Jul 1774 while the family was still living in what is now the Grave Creek area of Marshall County, WV.

In 1777 vicious Indian attacks forced the family to move back to Fayette County, PA where Morgan's grandfather Owen Davis, 1725-1810, lived. By 1790 the family moved next door to Greene County, PA

By 1810 the census shows Morgan's family living in what was then Ohio County, VA on 200 acres of land given to him by his father.. At sometime he married Ruth who was from Ohio. Per Elizabeth's entry in her bible, Ruth's surname was Jackson.

From Jan 1811 - Aug 1814 Morgan was a Private in the War of 1812. From 26 Jul - 11 Aug 1814 he was at Fort Erie fighting against the British.

Morgan & Ruth remained in WV where they had 5 known children.

4. Jackson, 1817-1887 MO, 11 ch
5. Elizabeth, 1822-aft 1870 prob MO, marr. B. Standiford, 8 ch

Update on children: Per Elizabeth's bible entry her parents had a child before Jacob.
6. Drusilla, b. 18 Jan 1810, nothing further on her.

In 1820 maps show a Jones sawmill on Big Grave Creek. This was on Morgan's land. In 1843 Morgan inherited 200 acres on Goose Creek, Wood County, WV from his father's estate. Morgan owned other land in the county and is said to have been a land speculator.

Morgan's will names 4 children, the census shows more in the family)
