Lt James Thomas Stephenson was one of fifty-six sailors killed aboard submarine USS-44 (SS-155) when it was sunk on 26 September 1943, while on her fifth war patrol, off of Paramushiru, Northern Kuriles. She was sunk during a gun battle on the surface with a Japanese destroyer. Eight men got off of USS-44, but only two were picked up by the destroyer, and they spent the rest of the war as prisoners of war.
Lt Stephenson was the son of Mr and Mrs James T Stephenson of Wartrace, Tennessee and was married with a ten-month-old daughter. He attended Wartrace High School and Oak Ridge Military Institute and graduated from the Naval Academy in December 1941. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
