Eugene served as an Ensign & Pilot, Scouting Squadron 66, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Marshall County, Iowa prior to the war.

Eugene was declared "Missing In Action" as he, and his crewman, crashed while strafing the Japanese on Alu Island during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
