Spencer was a crewman on B-26B #41-17590, assigned to the 5th Air Force, 38th Bombardment Group, 70th Bombardment Squadron. They were flying from Nandi airfield in Fiji on a local altitude training flight. They had a mid-air collision with P-39D #41-7043 south of Itai Island. Both planes plummeted into the sea and all men aboard were killed. None of their bodies were recovered.

Spencer is also memorialized in Admire Cemetery in Kansas, alongside his parents.
