Grace is listed in the annual register of the US Naval Academy as being appointed from the state of Vermont, which is almost certainly true. Since USNA is in Maryland, I wonder if that was what caused the assumption that he was from Maryland. The USNA yearbook, the Lucky Bag, for 1939 say that he was from Washington, DC. That usually meant that the man's father was career military and there wasn't really one place they could claim as being from. Also, he was the commander of the USS Halligan at the time of his death and killed in the destruction of it, at Okinawa Gunto, Ryukyu Islands.
