Joseph served as a Seaman Second Class, U.S.S. Denver (CL-58), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in LaSalle County, Illinois prior to the war.
The U.S.S. Denver, during a heavy air attack off Cape Torokina, Solomon Islands, was hit by an aerial torpedo which knocked out all power and communications and killed 20 of her men.
Joseph was "Killed In Action" during this attack.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Joseph was originally interred in Guadalcanal and was later repatriated here on January 4, 1949.
