Son of Mr. Emil Fiedler who resided in Salem Depot, New Hampshire.

Howard served as a Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-29 "Long Winded" #42-63509, 99th Bomber Squadron, 9th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 14, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a garage laborer and also as Single, without dependents.

Howard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-29 was shot down by ground anti-aircraft fire over the Straits of Shimonoseki, Japan, while on a mine-sowing operation.

8 crew members were MIA/KIA, and 3 survived and were rescued by a Navy submarine.

Howard was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
