Bruce served as a Yeoman, Second Class, U.S.S. Arizona (BB-39), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Warner, Merrimack County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Bruce was declared "Missing In Action" when the Arizona, which was moored at quays along Ford Island, was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
