Ernest served as a Storekeeper, First Class, U.S.S. Liscome Bay (CVE-56), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Keedysville, Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.

He was declared "Missing In Action" 20 miles southwest of Butaritari Island in the Pacific when the Liscome Bay was sunk by a torpedo from Japanese submarine I-175. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
