Robert served as a Private First Class with the 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He was "Killed In Action" on Iwo Jima by a japanese sniper.

He had served with the Marines for one year at the time of his death and was decorated with a Bronze Star.

Son of James R. Durnan and Irene L. MacDonald Durnan who resided on Faulkland Road, Wilmington, Delaware.
