YMS-103, a Minesweeper, was patrolling off the coast of Okinawa. An enemy mine exploded under the U.S.S. PMG-18 lifting her stern completely out of the water. YMS-103 was sent to assist survivors of PMG-18.
During this assist an explosion blew the bow off the YMS-103. The YMS-103 was later intentionally beached in territory held by the United States ground forces and declared a total loss.
James was declared "Missing In Action" during this operation.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
