Additional Info provided:

After the initial attack. Costin and two buddies were sitting in a compartment inside the sunken battleship West Virginia underwater 40 feet down. Cutting through the side of the hull for rescue was out of the question. The smallest hole in a pressueized compartment would cause a "blow out". All sailors know they are expendiable after condition "Zeb" is set on-board ship and the water tight doors are sealed.

Late spring 1942, Navy salvage teams started work on the West virginia after being put into dry dock and partially floated.
Commander Paul Dice leading a salvage party entered into a dry compartmenbt litterd with flashlight batteries and empty ration cans on the floor. A manhole cover to a fresh water supply was opened. He noticed a callendar 12 x 14 in size marked with big red X's that ended Dec 23.

Other shipmate in compartment was Clifford Nathan Olds Find a Grave Memorial #106772836.

Gravesite Details Entered the service from Indiana.
