He was declared "Missing In Action" off the Kurile Islands when his submarine was sunk by the Japanese.

He had served the Navy for two years and four months at the time of his death. He was decorated with a unit Presidential Citation, World War II Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart.

His remains were not recovered.
