Son of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Waldo Newman, Sr.

Ralph served as a Radarman Third Class, U.S.S. Emmons (DD-457), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Enfield, Grafton County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

The U.S.S. Emmons, along with the U.S.S. Rodman (DD-456), were on picket duty off Okinawa after the troop landings on April 1st. They both were attacked by a "massive" group of Japanese kamikazes.

The Emmons was struck by 5 kamikazes which set the ship ablaze and killed 60 crewmen and left 77 wounded. The next day the ship was intentionally sank.

The U.S.S. Rodman survived the attacks and the war.

Ralph was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

The Emmons was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation for her service during the landing at Okinawa and also received four battle stars for World War II service.
