THOMAS LANKFORD REPORTED MISSING

Mr. and Mrs. Claude Lankford, of Federalsburg, received a telegram Wednesday evening stating that their son, Thomas Lankford, USN, is reported "missing in the service of his country since May 14", somewhere in the south Pacific.

Storekeeper Lankford, who was 21 years old, enlisted in the navy at Wilmington on December 8th, 1942 and was sent to Providence, R.I., for his "boot" training. He then reported to Washington, D.C., in the Department of Ships where he stayed until December 1943 and then was transferred to Mechanicsburg, Pa., for further training. He spent a leave at the home of his parents during the Christmas holidays and sailed from the United States on February 2, 1944. Thomas Lankford, Storekeeper Technician 3/c, was attached to a "Spare parts Distribution Center" in the south Pacific.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Lankford, who formerly lived at Oil City, near Denton, Lankford has one sister, Mrs. Roscoe Parker, now living in Florida with her husband who is in the service. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community on this sad news. The young man is a graduate of Caroline High School, Denton.

This is the seventh person from Federalsburg who is listed as dead or missing among the men in the armed forces. The others were: Seaman Carl Deen Jr., missing; Sgt. Smith Pennypacker, missing; Sgt. Walter Marine, killed in England; Pfc. Cecil Skethway, killed in Italy; Pfc. Carl Blades, killed in Italy; and Lieut. A.F. Brittain Jr., killed in the South Pacific.
