Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 25, 1944, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Son of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick J. Lally.

Francis served as a Storekeeper, Second Class, U.S.S. Liscome Bay (CVE-56), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

The Liscome Bay was hit by a torpedo from Japanese submarine I-175 near the engine room and detonated the aircraft bomb stockpile, causing a major explosion.

53 officers and 591 enlisted men, including Admiral Henry M. Mullinnix, Captain Irving D. Wiltsie, and famous Pearl Harbor hero Ship's Cook Third Class Doris "Dorie" Miller, went down with the ship off Makin during the war.

Francis was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

The Liscome Bay received one battle star for her World War II service.
