Leland served as a Aviation Machinist's Mate, First Class, U.S.S. Hancock (CV-19), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Colchester, Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.
The Hancock, while off Okinawa, had a Japanese kamikaze that cartwheeled across her flight deck and crashed into a group of planes while its bomb hit the port catapult to cause a tremendous explosion on April 7th. 62 men were killed and 71 wounded.
Leland was declared "Missing In Action" in this explosion during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
