Walter Robert Sadler had been a pre-med student for three years, prior joining the class of 1942, at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduation and receiving his commission as an Ensign, he trained as a submariner and later joined the crew of the USS Golet. After leaving Midway for it's first patrol, the Golet was never heard from again and presumed to be lost. After the war, study of the Japanese records from the time suggested that she was probably depth charged and sunk on June 14, 1944, off the northeastern coast of Honshu.
