James was declared "Missing In Action" in the Pacific when the U.S.S. Franklin was attacked by a Japanese bomber which pierced the cloud cover and dropped two semi-armor-piercing bombs on the Franklin during the war. The ship suffered a total of 924 killed and 265 wounded.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
