Richard served as a Captain & Aircraft Commander on B-29 #42-65362, 62nd Bomber Squadron, 39th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" over Guam when his B-29, while on a bombing mission to Tokyo, was hit by enemy flak and crashed during the war. He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Airr Medal and a Purple Heart.
