Robert served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class, C.G.C. Bedloe (WSC-128), U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.
The C.G.C. Bedloe (WSC-128), along with the C.G.C. Jackson (WSC-142), were dispatched to assist a Liberty Ship which had been torpedoed off the North Carolina Coast during which was called " The Great Atlantic Hurricane ".
The C.G.C. Bedloe, a 125 foot cutter, was struck four times by the towering waves before sinking. All 38 officers and crew men safely abandoned ship and at least 30 were able to obtain a hold on the lifecrafts. However, due to fighting the hurricase while still on board plus going through the ordeal of hanging onto liferafts for 51 hours, had proved too much for most of the men and only 12 were able to hang on until rescued. One man slid under the water only minutes before the rescue craft came into sight. " 2 " officers and " 24 " men were lost.
Robert was declared " Missing In Action " in the " Line Of Duty " in this sinking during the war.
Service # 547964
Son of Mr. Clarence Franklin Clements who resided in the District Of Columbia.
This hurricane also caused the U.S.S. Warrington (DD-383), C.G.C. Jackson (WSC-142), minesweeper YMS-409, and the lightship Vineyard Sound (LV-73) to sink with a total loss of " 340 " sailors.
