He enlisted in the Army on October 9, 1940, prior to the war, in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being single, without dependents. He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire.

The Battle of Guadalcanal was fought between Aug 7, 1942 and Feb 7, 1943. It was the first major offensive of the Allied Forces against Japan. It took place in the Solomon Islands.
The 35th Regiment was attached to the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. It was sent to Guadalcanal on November 25, 1942, to relieve Marines near Henderson Field. First elements landed near the Tenaru River, December 17, 1942, and entered combat, January 10, 1943, participating in the seizure of Kokumbona and the reduction of the Mount Austen Pocket in some of the bitterest fighting of the Pacific campaign. With other units on February 5, 1943 it helped end organized enemy resistance.

The 'e' was dropped from the family name by his father, Thomas.
