James served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Intrepid (CV-11), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Hartford County, Connecticut prior to the war.

The U.S.S. Intrepid on January 31st was supporting Marine Corps landings at Ennuebing Island which was part of the Marshall Islands.

James died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident in this support operations during the war.

He was buried at sea.
