Robert served as a First Lieutenant on B-29 "Joltin Josie" #42-24614, 873rd Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Scott County, Iowa prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 26, 1942 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" when the "Joltin Josie" suffered an explosion shortly after takeoff from Saipan Atol and crashed into the sea.

They were assigned to mission 51 along with 114 other B-29's that were dispatched to attack the Nakajima aircraft plant in Tokyo during the war.

B-29 "Joltin Josie" #42-24614 was one of six B-29's lost of this mission.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.

Robert also has a "Cenotaph" in the Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport, Iowa.
