George served as a Private First Class & Aircraft Mechanic, Marine Fighting Squadron "Avengers" (VMF-211), U.S. Marine Corps based at the Palmyra Atoll during World War II.

He resided in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps on February 13, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He received training as an Aircraft Gunner & in Aviation Maintenance.

George died in the "Line Of Duty" when a North American SNJ-4 'Texan' he was on, which was piloted by Lt. Bruce Ffoulkes, Jr (Later MIA during the war), was involved in a mid-air collision with a F4F-4 piloted by Lt. Ralph Robinson. Lt. Ffoulkes was able to parachute out of the plane after the collision however George was not.
