John served as a Steward's Mate First Class, U.S.S. Gilmer (DD-233), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided at 1001 B Street, Wilmington, Delaware prior to the war.

John was "Killed In Action" when the Gilmer has hit by a Japanese kamikaze in her galley deckhouse during the war.

John was the only sailor on the Gilmer that was killed in this attack.

He had served in the Navy for one year at the time of his death and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea.
