John served as a Ship's Cook, Second Class, on the U.S.S. Aircraft Carrier Bismarck Sea (CVE-95), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware prior to the war.

The Bismarck Sea, while support the battle of Iwo Jima, was hit by two Japanese kamikazes and sank during the war. 318 crewmen, out of a crew of 923, were lost in this sinking during the war. The Bismarck Sea was the last US Navy aircraft carrier to be lost during World War II.

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.

Son of John W. and Mary R. Brown.

The Bismarck Sea received three battle stars for her World War II operations.
