Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until April 19, 1946, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

James served as a Sergeant, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 27, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the production of cement and also as Single, without dependents.

James was declared "Missing In Action" on Ie Shima during the war.

He was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
