Ray served as a Staff Sergeant, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Salt Lake County, Utah prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 27, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Cook and also as Single, without dependents.

He was a passenger on B-24D "Mammy Yokum" (#42-40221), 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force.

B-24D "Mammy Yokum" (#42-40221) was on a ferrying trip from Bomber 2 Airfield to Guadalcanal with a crew of 5 and 10 passengers.

Ray was declared "Missing In Action" in the "Line Of Duty" when the B-24 he was on, after taking off from Bomber 2 Airfield, New Hebrides, developed engine trouble and had to ditch in the bay close to the Airfield during the war.

A total of 6 perished during this flight and 9 survived.
