Elroy served as a Sergeant & Right Gunner on B-29 #44-69748, 1st Bomber Squadron, 9th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He resided at 123 Berlin Street, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Elroy was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-29, while on a mission to the Mitsubishi aircraft engine works at Nagoya, Japan, was hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire and exploded over Nakashinden, Yatomi-chi, Nagoya, Japan during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
