Corporal Karlson served with the 3rd Battalion of the 59th Coastal Artillery Regiment, Coastal Artillery Corps, United States Army, during the invasion of the Philippines by the Japanese during World War II. He was taken as a prisoner of war on 7 May 1942 when all American forces in the Philippines surrendered. Shortly thereafter he sailed for Pusan, Korea inside the hold of the Japanese "Hell Ship" Tottori Maru, and was then transported overland to the Mukden Prisoner of War Camp near present day Shenyang, China. He died there of Dysentery and Beri-Beri.

Kenneth's parents were Alexander and Rena Wilkes Karlson. Alexander was born in Sweden about 1866 and immigrated to America in 1882. Rena was born in Canada about 1878 and immigrated to America in 1886. Alexander, in 1920, worked as a fireman on a railroad. Kenneth had four older siblings, Maude, Edith, Maybelle and Raymond.
