On August 16, 1944, B-25D Mitchell #41-29753 with nine Army personnel departed Attu Island, Alaska, on an administrative flight destined for Adak Island, Alaska. The twin-motored medium bomber, assigned to the 6th Radar Calibration Detachment, was witnessed by personnel aboard USS Charleston (PG-51), anchored in Tanaga Bay, attempt to land at the Adak airfield. Obstructed by light rain and shifting fog, the pilots missed on the first two tries. On a third attempt, the plane was seen to dive out of the sky in a near vertical fall and plunge into the bay. The Charleston immediately raced to the scene but found no trace of the bomber or anyone who was aboard.


The seven crewmembers and two passengers were declared missing in action when they were lost in the waters of the Bering Sea off the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Missing Air Crew Report № 7861.
