Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until February 4, 1946.

Owen served as an Ensign & Pilot on a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-10), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Fayette County, Iowa prior to the war.

Owen was declared "Missing In Action" when his SB2C failed to return from Strike #1A over Chichi Jima, Marianas Islands.

His SB2C was one of three lost that day.

His crewman, Lloyd Richard "Dick" Woellhof, survived the crash and was later "Executed" by the Japanese Army.

He was awarded the Air Medal.
