John, who resided at 903 Elm Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Wasp (CV-18), U.S. Navy during World War II.

The Wasp was hit on this day by a 500-pound armor piercing bomb that exploded in the crew's galley while it was supporting Okinawa-Gunto operations. Approximately 102 crewmen were lost.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and seven months at the time of his death and was awarded a Purple Heart. John was the only Delawarean lost on the Wasp.
