Carlton served as a Private, Quartermasters Corps, U.S. Army during World War II. He was assigned to Hickman Army Air Force Field, Honolulu, Hawaii prior to the war.

He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 21, 1940, prior to the war, in Concord, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Carlton was "Killed In Action" during the invasion of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese which provoked the United States to enter World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

It is unknown at this time why "Maine" is shown on his headstone since he was born in New Hampshire and also entered the service from New Hampshire.
