Paul Penfield entered the service on August, 15, 1917. He received commission of second Lieutenant at the First Plattsburg Training Camp for Officers, and was subsequently assigned to the 306th infantry at Camp Upton, N.Y. . In December 1917 he was attached to the air service as an observer. He was in active service with the French Escadrille C-46, from April until August 1918. He was shot down in combat with six enemy planes on August 15, 1918, near Ribecourt and Lassigny, France. He was awarded the "Croix de Guerre" with Palm by Marshall Pétain.
