A house painter prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force, Private Davis embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne for overseas aboard HMAT "Afric" (A19) on 5 January 1916. He later transferred to the 59th Battalion. He died at the 8th Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, France from wounds received in action at Fromelles. He was 36 years of age.
