After being employed with the West Drug Company and at the Brooks Plant he left Dunkirk for Ontario to live with his grandparents in Walkerton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 24, 1916 in with Company A, 160th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force.
PVT Herd was wounded in a battle on the Western Front and died in the Eighth Casualty Clearing Station in Agnez-les-Duisans, near Arras France.
