Earnest Cowen's family had moved from Oklahoma to Tulare County, California about 1940. 26-year old Cowen enlisted in the Army on June 23, 1944 at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Two months after D-Day, he landed in France in August 1944 with the 736 Field Artillery Battalion. They fought German troops in Fontainebleau, Montmort, Melun and Reims. Cowen was killed outside of Haller, Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge.
On Oct. 20, 2017, the Visalia Times-Delta newspaper in Visalia, California published an article by reporter James Ward entitled "World War II Veteran Keeps 72-Year-Old Promise To Fallen Tulare Soldier." Glen Mounts, who served with Cowen, was seriously injured the same day Cowen was killed by a German mortar. The article (with photos) tells of Mounts' efforts to locate Cowen's family.
