First Sgt. Robert M. Bateman, 23, was killed in fighting last January 7 near Bastogne, Belgium. He was the son of Mrs. Ann Bateman, 513 Van Buren, who was notified by his regimental commander. She has received the purple heart medal posthumously awarded her son.

Bateman's company made an attack that day against German positions in the face of fierce and determined resistance from heavily manned and well dug-in positions. Sgt. Bateman was leading his men in the attack when he was caught in a burst of Nazi machine gun fire and instantly killed.

A graduate of Capitol Catholic High School, in Topeka, Kansas, Bateman entered service five years ago and went overseas last July. He served with the glider infantry, an airborne division, and was first stationed in England.

The last letter his mother received from her son was written Dec. 29 from France. It arrived in Topeka Jan. 16.
Sgt. Bateman was buried with full military honors with the Catholic chaplain officiating.
