Enlisting in the air force in 1940, Philip trained at Calgary, Yorkton and Brandon and received his wings as a wireless air gunner at Macdonald, Manitoba, in Aug 1941. He went overseas soon after. His commanding officer wrote after he was reported missing: "He was a first-rate wireless operator-air gunner."
